Pictorial Elements
1980s

Created in the early 1980s, these works emerged during the transition from analog photography to digital imaging. While most artists sought to make digital images resemble traditional photographs, my interest was in the image's most fundamental pictorial element.

Whether realized as printed ink dots, glass beads, silicon carbide, or other modular materials, these pictorial elements became the vocabulary from which the images were constructed. As viewers move toward or away from the work, images dissolve into their individual components and then reassemble through perception.

While celebrating new technology, this series explores a rather timeless question: How do simple visual elements become an image?
